About the event

If you fancy having a go on a pottery wheel or coming along to practise your skills then this is the session for you.  It is suitable for complete beginners and those with some experience.  The session lasts for up to 90 minutes and includes a short demonstration on how to throw a cylinder for those that need it and then it is over to you to have a go. You will have your own wheel to use for the duration of the session but there may be other potters joining the session as there are 4 wheels available to book.

If you know what you are doing you can just get started instead of watching the demonstration.   The pre-wedged off-white stoneware clay is balled up ready for you to get started straight away.

This session is primarily designed for you to come and have a go and is not necessarily about creating a finished pot, but if you do manage to make a pot you are proud of and would like it to be fired in the kiln then I can do this.  One pot per person is included to be fired and clear glazed.  I charge £5 per pot for any additional pots up to 15 cm tall and 15cm wide to be fired twice in the kiln.  It is first  bisque fired and then glaze fired where a clear glaze will be applied.

This fun session is a great way to experience using a pottery wheel with a bit of help on hand if you need it. There may be up to 4 other potters in the session. Well behaved children from age 8 years are very welcome if accompanied by a participating adult. The studio is small so only those partcicipating can stay in the studio (sorry no spectators)

The session lasts for 90 minutes to include 5-10 minutes of clean up time at the end of the session.  Please arrive no more than 5 minutes before the start time.  The session will start prompty so please arrive in time to pop on one of our  aprons and be ready to watch the demonstration at the beginning. It is a good idea to wear clothes that you don't mind getting scruffy. Short fingernails make wheel throwing so much easier.  Long hair should be tied up and jewelry removed.

Everyone taking part cleans up the wheel they were using ready for the next session.

Pots will be ready to collect approximately 6 weeks after the session.

If you are unable to collect your handy work, I can package and post a  single pot for £5 to any mainland UK address. If you have more than one  pot I can post your parcel (up to a weight of 10kg) for £10. (Overseas postage can be arranged - prices on request)

Any extra costs need to be paid at the end of the session please by cash or card.

Postage Disclaimer

I  will wrap pots very carefully and do my best to get them to you in one  piece. Please understand though, that I have no control once they are in  the courier's hands. There is no insurance for posting pottery so the  pots are sent at your risk.  Please understand that I can not be held  responsible for any damages.  Unless arrangements have been made, any  pots not collected within 2 months will sadly have to be disposed of, as  I simply do not have space to store items indefinitely. Thank you for  your understanding.

There is free parking on the street outside the studio for up to 3 hours with a parking disc. I have spare discs if you need one.

This is a fun taster/practise session. It is a good way to experience using a pottery wheel with a little bit of help available before seeing if you would like to take the hobby further.  It could also be a helpful activity to do prior to hiring one of our 'Wheel at Home'  hire wheels. For more detailed and personalised instruction, I recommend the two hour beginner sessions where the studio is booked exclusively for you or your small group.

** Please note the studio is situated down some steps in my basement where the ceiling is quite low, so if you are over 5ft 10 inches you will need to mind your head in parts.
