This is a really fun experience and makes a great introduction for anyone wishing to explore the joys of the pottery wheel. You will have a wibbly wobbly time making unique hand thrown pots.
Please be aware that this is a 2 hour public session for up to five people and so you may have other potters taking part alongside you. If you would prefer a private studio session for yourself or your group at a time to suit you, please take a look at the Private Bookings page. If you are wanting more serious or focussed tuition a private session may be your preference.
What we’ll do
During the session you will use white earthenware clay to have a go at throwing your own small pots on the pottery wheel. You will be shown the following processes:
Preparing the clay by ‘wedging’
How to centre the clay on the wheel
How to open out the pot and pull up the walls
How to add a touch of colour using ‘slip’ if you wish
At the end of the session you can choose your favourite pot for me to glaze and fire.
Your pot will be left for several days to thoroughly dry out before being fired in the kiln. Once cooled, the pot will be coated in a clear glossy glaze and fired a second time. It will be ready to collect around 4-6 weeks later.
Additional pots: If you can't bear to part with your other practice pots, I can fire and glaze additional pots for a fee of £5 per extra pot.
Postage: If you are unable to collect your handy work, I can package and post to any mainland UK address at a cost of £5 for a single pot or £10 for 2 or more pots (up to 10kg in weight ) if packaged in the same box and going to the same address.
(Overseas postage can be arranged - prices on request)
Any optional extras need to be paid for at the end of the session by cash or card please.
I will wrap pots very carefully and do my best to get them to you in one piece. Please understand though, that I have no control once they are in the courier's hands. There is no insurance for posting pottery so the pots are sent at your risk. Please understand that I can not be held responsible for any damages. Unless arrangements have been made, any pots not collected within 2 months will sadly have to be disposed of, as I simply do not have space to store items indefinitely. Thank you for your understanding.
What I’ll provide
A selection of teas, coffee and decaffinated coffee, squash
Apron (but please wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty!)
What to bring
A hair bobble to tie up long hair
Old comfortable clothes
Flat closed toe shoes.
Please arrive 5 minutes before your session time to get your apron on and be ready to start on time.
Tip: Short fingernails are much easier to throw with
There is free parking on the street outside the studio for up to 3 hours with a parking disc. I have spare discs so please ask if you need one.
These scheduled public taster sessions are most suited to adults and accompanied teenagers.
For younger children and family groups I recommend making a private booking.
