UPDATE: Public Classes During Covid Restrictions
In order to make our cosy studio Covid Secure, we have made some changes to what we offer.
To allow for physical distancing of 1m+ we are restricted to 2 participants in public sessions.
This means that many of our usual public classes are unfeasible at this time. We are pleased, however, to continue to offer a variety of private group bookings where up to 4 participants can be catered for.
Duration: 1 hour
When: Monday Evenings
Time: First session 5pm. Second session 7pm
Places: Up to 2 students at £25 each
Includes: Clear glazing and firing of 1 pot per person.
Resources: 1 electric pottery wheel per person
Refreshments: A selection of tea, coffee or squash.
This is a really fun experience and makes a great introduction for anyone wishing to explore the joys of the pottery wheel. You will have a wibbly wobbly time making unique hand thrown pots. Please be aware that this is a 1 hour public session so you may have another potter taking part alongside you.
If you would like a child to take part, please purchase both tickets. Children / teenagers are welcome to take part if accompanied by a paying adult. Alternatively, you may purchase both tickets for 2 children provided an adult stays for the duration of the session to supervise.
If you would prefer a private studio session for yourself or your group at a time to suit you, please take a look at the Private Bookings page to see what we offer.
What we’ll do
During the session you will use off-white stoneware clay to have a go at throwing your own small pots on the pottery wheel. You will be shown the following processes:
How to centre the clay on the wheel
How to open out the pot and pull up the walls
You will then have the rest of the session to practise what you've been shown - with help available of course.
At the end of the session you can choose your favourite pot for me to glaze and fire.
Please note; this is a short introductory session to throwing. There time does not allow for decorating your pot. If you wish to make a pot with added coloured slip please consider booking an alternative workshop e.g. the 90 minute private tuition or the 2 hour potter's wheel experience.
Your pot will be left for several days to thoroughly dry out before being fired in the kiln. Once cooled, the pot will be coated in a clear glossy glaze and fired a second time. It will emerge from the kiln a lovely off white creamy colour and will be ready to collect around 4-6 weeks later.
Additional pots: If you can't bear to part with your other practice pots, I can fire and glaze additional pots for a fee of £5 per extra pot.
Postage: If you are unable to collect your handy work, I can package and post to any mainland UK address at a cost of £5 for a single pot or £10 for 2 or more pots (up to 10kg in weight ) if packaged in the same box and going to the same address.
(Overseas postage can be arranged - prices on request)
Any optional extras need to be paid for at the end of the session by cash or card please.
I will wrap pots very carefully and do my best to get them to you in one piece. Please understand though, that I have no control once they are in the courier's hands. There is no insurance for posting pottery so the pots are sent at your risk. Please understand that I can not be held responsible for any damages. Unless arrangements have been made, any pots not collected within 2 months will sadly have to be disposed of, as I simply do not have space to store items indefinitely. Thank you for your understanding.
What I’ll provide
A disposable apron (but please wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty!)
What to bring
A face mask (to be worn at all times)
A hair bobble to tie up long hair
Old comfortable clothes
Flat closed toe shoes.
Please arrive 5 minutes before your session time to get your apron on and be ready to start on time.
Tip: Short fingernails are much easier to throw with
There is free parking on the street outside the studio for up to 3 hours with a parking disc. I have spare discs so please ask if you need one.
These scheduled public taster sessions are most suited to adults and accompanied teenagers. (We regret that during the Covid-19 pandemic and whilst restrictions remain in place for physical distancing, we do not have capacity for non-participants to come and watch. Please either book both slots or consider making a booking at a later date when the restrictions are no longer in place.)
For younger children and family groups, I recommend making a private booking.
Thank you for your understanding.
