This one day mini course is a fun hands on introduction to the pottery wheel. You will be introduced to the basics of throwing funtional pottery.

Aimed at small groups of friends or family with no prior or minimal experience.  You will have exclusive use of the studio for the day with dedictated tuition.

(Individuals or couples are most welcome to book this private studio day.  Please note, we also offer monthly public sessions at a lower cost for those happy to take part alongside other pottery enthusiasts. N.b These public sessions are on hold until social distancing is no longer required.)

What we’ll do

You will be shown how to prepare the clay by wedging, how to center the clay and how to make simple forms starting with cylinders.  During the session, you will be shown how to alter the form to create simple bowls, vases or small plates.

In the afternoon you have time to practice what you have learned and if you wish, add a splash of colour to your creations with some coloured slips. It is a practice based course and a good way to get to grips with the basics.

The class is kept intentionally small with a maximum of 4 participants to ensure plenty of help when needed. This course is suitable for adults and teenagers accompanied by a participating adult.

4 participants £80 each (total £320)
3 participants £90 each (total £270)
2 participants £100 each (total £200)
1 participant £200

At the end of the day you can choose up to 4 of your favourite pots to be fired and clear glazed.

There is a one hour break for lunch at 1pm. Please note that for health reasons there is no facility to eat lunch in the clay studio.   Peasholm Park, just a short walk away, is a lovely place to enjoy a packed lunch or eat in the cafe there.  Alternatively there is a sandwich bar, cafe, fish and chip shop, Mexican snack bar and convenience stores within walking distance on Dean Road or Columbus Ravine.  The afternoon session recommences at 2pm.

Refreshments of tea and coffee will be available throughout the day.

Your pots will be left for several days to thoroughly dry out before being fired in the kiln.  Once cooled, the pots will be coated in a clear glossy glaze and fired a second time.   They will be ready to collect around 4-6 weeks later.

Optional extras:

Additional pots:  If you want extra pots to the four included with your booking, you can if you wish, buy these pots for £5 per exta pot to cover materials, firings and technician time.

Not Able to Collect?

  • Postage:   If you are unable to collect your handy work, I can package and post for £10 per parcel to any mainland UK address.  (The postage cost for a group of up to 4 people's pots is still £10 if the pots are going in the same parcel to the same delivery address and is under 10kg in weight.  (Usually this will be approx 4 pots per person)
(Overseas postage can be arranged - prices on request)

Any optional extras need to be paid for at the end of the session by cash or card please.

Postage Disclaimer

I will wrap pots very carefully and do my best to get them to you in one piece. Please understand though, that I have no control once they are in the courier's hands. There is no insurance for posting pottery so the pots are sent at your risk.  Please understand that I can not be held responsible for any damages.  Unless arrangements have been made, any pots not collected within 2 months will sadly have to be disposed of, as I simply do not have space to store items indefinitely. Thank you for your understanding.
