This public, one day mini course is a fun hands on introduction to the pottery wheel. Aimed at beginners or those with minimal experience. You will be introduced to the basics of throwing functional pottery.

(If you wish to come along with your own private group on a mutually convenient day and time, this day is also available as an exclusive private studio booking)

What we’ll do

You will be shown how to prepare the clay by wedging, how to center the clay and how to make simple forms starting with cylinders.  During the session, you will be shown how to alter the form to create simple bowls, vases or small plates.

In the afternoon you have time to practice what you have learned and if you wish, add a splash of colour to your creations with some coloured slips.

It is a practice based course and a good way to get to experience the basics.  An apron is provided but please wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. Flat shoes are more comfortable and it is important for long hair to be tied back and jewelry removed. Short fingers are also much easier to throw pots with.

The class is kept intentionally small with a maximum of 4 participants to ensure plenty of help when needed. This course is suitable for keen adults and teenagers accompanied by a participating adult.

There is a one hour break for lunch at 1pm. Please note that for health reasons there is no facility to eat lunch in the clay studio.   Peasholm Park, just a short walk away, is a lovely place to enjoy a packed lunch or eat in the cafe there.  Alternatively there is a sandwich bar, cafe, fish and chip shop, mexican snack bar and convenience stores within walking distance on Dean Road or Columbus Ravine.  The afternoon session recommences at 2pm.

Refreshments of tea and coffee will be available to help yourself to throughout the day.

At the end of the day you can choose up to 4 of your favourite pots to be fired and clear glazed.
Your pots will be left for several days to thoroughly dry out before being fired in the kiln.  Once cooled, the pots will be coated in a clear glossy glaze and fired a second time.

Additional pots: Your 4 favourite pots are fired and glazed for you,  but should you find it hard to part with your extra practice pots you can if you wish, purchase additional pots at £5 per extra pot to cover materials, firing and technician time.

Your pots will be ready to collect around 6 weeks later. This process can not be rushed and you will receive a message when they are ready.

Not Able to Collect?

  • Postage:   If you are unable to collect your handy work, I can package and post your pots for £10 per parcel up to 10kg to any mainland UK address.  (If you have booked as a group of up to 4 people  and wish to have delivery going to the same address in the same box, the price remains £10 for up to10kg total weight (approx 4 pots per person)
(Overseas postage can be arranged - prices on request)

Any optional extras e.g. extra pots or delivery need to be paid for at the end of the session by cash or card please.

Postage Disclaimer

I will wrap pots very carefully and do my best to get them to you in one piece. Please understand though, that I have no control once they are in the courier's hands. There is no insurance for posting pottery so the pots are sent at your risk.  Please understand that I can not be held responsible for any damages.  Unless arrangements have been made, any pots not collected within 2 months will sadly have to be disposed of, as I simply do not have space to store items indefinitely. Thank you for your understanding.
