About The Event

This simple winter workshop is suitable for children from around 6 -12 years of age. (Age is not fixed in stone)

This winter workshop teaches some key pottery skills which are useful for many clay projects and would link in nicely with a study of Habitats, the Antarctic or the Southern Hemisphere.

Date: Thursday 10th January

Time: 1:30pm (please arrive 5 mins early to allow settling in time before the session starts.) This session will run for approximately 1 hour 30 mins

Address: 133 Dean Road, Scarborough, YO127JH parking is free on the street for up to 3 hours.

The children will learn how to:

* Form a pinch pot and manipulate soft clay.

* Attach clay pieces securely using clay slip

* Use clay tools

* Use underglazes to carefully paint on colour

They will also be introduced to some language used in association with clay work e.g. firing, kiln, bisque, glaze etc.....

When they have completed their piece, they will be able to add colour using special underglaze colours which can be applied to damp clay.

I will explain the whole making process step by step to make it fairly simple, however younger children or those with no experience of working with clay may need a little bit of assistance from a parent. If the children have time remaining they are welcome to have a go at sculpting other pinch pot animals or bowls.

Their work will be fired twice in the kiln to give it a nice glossy glaze. After the first firing blue glass nuggets are added, these melt and fuse into the bottom of the bowl to form the water for the penguin to paddle in.

This model can be used as an incense holder by adding a small hole to the top of the penguin's head (where the incense stick would be held).

Aprons will be provided but please wear suitable clothing that you do not mind getting scruffy.

There will be juice/water and tea and coffee available for those taking part and waiting. Please help yourselves to this. :)

There is a maximum number of 8 kids places for this session these are booked on a first come first served basis. A limited number of 2 adult places can also be booked for this session if you are also booking in a child. Adult prices are slightly discounted. ( Maximum one adult permitted per family on a first come first served basis)
