About The Event

For this project, the kids will flatten out a mound of clay to create their island shape, then they can form hills, vallies, rivers, fields, forests and buildings to create their own unique landscape.  Maybe it will be a pirate treasure island with some hidden treasure to find...or maybe it will be their dream island holiday destination?

When they have completed the modelling, there will be underglaze and coloured clay slips (paints) available for the children to paint their islands.

Their creations will be then left to dry slowly and be ready for collection in approximately 4 weeks time after being fired once in the kiln and then coated in a clear coat of modpodge sealer.  It may be a good idea to look at some maps or even draw out a plan before coming along to the session if you think this will help your child.

This fun 3D island project could be a great way to bring in some geography work with your kids.  You could look at the different features of landscapes and look at contours on maps and discuss bird's eye view.

It may even spark some creative writing.  After you have made the model it could be used as a story starter to write about who lives on the island and all the adventures they may have.  The possibilities are endless.
